Every aurora guide in Iceland tells you to check the Icelandic Met Office forecast at vedur.is. Almost none of them tell you that the map is colour-coded in the exact opposite way to your instinct - and that misreading it by a single shade is how people talk themselves out of the clearest night of their trip.
Here is what the map actually says, and how to use it the way a guide does.
The Colour Trap: Green Means Cloudy
The Met Office states it plainly on the forecast page: “Green areas are cloudy and white areas clear skies.”
Read that twice. Green is bad. White is good.
This catches almost everyone, because green is the colour of the aurora itself. Visitors open the map, see a big green blob sitting over the south coast, and read it as “lots of activity here.” It means the opposite: that is a cloud deck, and under it you will see nothing at all.
So the first move on any Iceland aurora map is to hunt for white. Not green, not the number in the corner - white. Find the white patch, work out how far away it is, and the rest of the night plans itself. Our guide to chasing a clear sky in real time covers which direction to drive once you have found one.
The 0-9 Number in the Corner Is Not Tonight’s Score
In the upper-right box, the map shows a forecast of auroral activity on a scale of 0 to 9. That range is derived from the Kp index, and it comes with three limitations that are easy to miss.
It is a midnight value. The number describes activity around midnight on the day you have selected, not across the whole evening. Aurora does not honour a single timestamp.
It is a planetary number, not an Iceland number. Kp measures global geomagnetic disturbance. Almost all Kp advice online is written for the UK or the continental United States, where you genuinely need a 5 or higher to see anything. Iceland sits directly beneath the auroral oval, so the bar is far lower. The Met Office says so itself: “Even grade 2 (low activity) can be beautiful and grade 3 (moderate) can be dazzling.”
It is the least decisive of the two figures on the page. A 6 under solid green is a night indoors. A 2 under white sky at a dark rural site is the display people fly here for. If you are waiting for a big number before you bother going out, you will miss most of the season.

Pick the Right Cloud Layer
This is the setting most visitors never touch, and it changes the picture completely. The map lets you switch between low and mid-level clouds, lower clouds, middle clouds, and high clouds.
The default combined low-and-mid view is the right one for aurora, because low and middle cloud is opaque - it ends the night. High cloud is a different problem. Thin cirrus at altitude is often translucent enough to shoot straight through; it will soften a display and cost you contrast, but it rarely kills one.
The practical consequence: if the low-and-mid map is white and only the high-cloud layer is green, go anyway. That is a viable night that the single default view would have made look marginal.
Use the Slider Like a Hunter
The map runs six days ahead at four time steps a day - 00, 06, 12 and 18. Drag the slider under the map, or click a day or time directly, and the activity figure updates with it.
Two habits separate a useful reading from a pointless one:
- Step through the night, not across the days. Compare the 18:00 and 00:00 frames for the same date. Iceland’s fronts move fast, and a sky that is green at dinner is frequently white by midnight. A single glance at one frame is how a good night gets written off.
- Trust the near end of the range. Day one or two is a plan. Day five or six is a mood. Note also that the timing information on the page is stated as valid for Reykjavik - if you are in Akureyri or the Westfjords, darkness arrives on a different clock.
What the Map Cannot Tell You
The Met Office map is the best cloud model in the country, and it still leaves out three things that decide whether you actually see anything.
It does not account for the moon. A bright moon high in the sky washes out a faint arc as effectively as thin cloud, and the map has no opinion about it.
It does not account for local darkness. A white sky directly over central Reykjavik is still a light-polluted sky. You need the white patch and somewhere dark inside it - which is why a 30-minute drive to Grotta Lighthouse or 45 minutes east to Thingvellir National Park so often turns a mediocre forecast into a good night.
And it is a model, not an observation. The Met Office also publishes ground-truth station data, and on a marginal night what the stations are reporting right now beats what the model predicted this morning.
Combining those layers by hand, at 22:00, in the cold, is genuinely hard. Learn the vedur map anyway. It is the source everything else is built on, and knowing that green means cloudy will save you at least one night this winter.
