Scoria crater rising straight off Route 1 at Bifröst, in a protected lava field. A wooden stairway climbs to the rim in about 15 minutes, but the steps ice over and the rim is exposed and unfenced — after dark the lava field at the base is the safer vantage point. Stay on the boardwalk; the moss beside it takes decades to regrow.

Parking

Free gravel car park signed off Route 1 between Borgarnes and Bifröst, at the foot of the stairway. It is unlit and the sky is open over the lava, so there is no need to climb for the view.
