Why more than one night matters
Seeing the aurora needs three things at once: activity overhead, darkness, and a gap in the clouds. Any single night might give you two out of three.
Iceland's weather moves fast, and that cuts both ways — a clouded-out evening is often followed by a clear one. Each extra night is another roll of the dice, which is why we suggest three. It is also why we will not print a percentage on this page: we would rather tell you the truth than a number we cannot stand behind.

Walk out of the door. On an active night you do not need to drive anywhere, and in deep winter this is often the safest option by a wide margin.

Hvítserkur ~45 minutes
The sea stack in the water — the most photogenic foreground in the region, and already one of the 104 spots the app scores every five minutes. Check road conditions first: the Vatnsnes road (Rte 711) is gravel and is not always maintained in winter.

A basalt fort on a rise, with a clear view in every direction.

Nobody can guarantee the northern lights. Anyone who does is selling you something.
The aurora needs a quiet sun to cooperate and the weather to get out of the way, and neither takes instruction. Some stays get three clear, active nights. Some get cloud from start to finish. That is the honest shape of it.
What the forecast can do is make it far less likely that you sleep through a good night, or drive an hour for a sky that was never going to open. That is the whole point of it, and it is the reason this farm and this app belong together.

When is aurora season?
Roughly late August to early April — whenever the nights are properly dark. Midsummer is too bright to see anything, however active the sun is.
Do I need a car?
Yes. The farm is rural and there is no public transport to the door. In winter, check road.is before you set off anywhere.
Will someone take me out to see the lights?
No — this is a self-drive stay, not a tour. You get the house, and the app tells you when and where conditions look good. Where you go is your call.
How many nights should I book?
Three, if you can. The weather gets more chances to cooperate, and there is no way to schedule a clear sky in advance.
What if it is cloudy the whole time?
It happens, and we will not pretend otherwise. The app will tell you honestly rather than sending you out into a sky that was never going to open — and Hrútafjörður is worth a visit in daylight too.
