A retry is not a refund

This is the misunderstanding worth clearing up first. Almost no aurora operator in Iceland refunds you for going out and seeing nothing — the tour ran, the guide worked, the fuel was burned. What the good ones offer instead is another seat on another night, free.

Those are very different products. A refund gets your money back and leaves you without an aurora. A retry costs you nothing extra and gives you a second roll of the dice, which is what you actually came for. Judge a policy on how easily you can use it, not on how generous it sounds.

Separately from all of this, operators cancel departures outright when conditions are hopeless, and a cancellation normally is refunded or rebooked. That is a different mechanism from the policies below, and it is a sign of a company behaving well rather than badly.

The three kinds, and whether you can use one on this trip

Unlimited retries during your stay — 4 of the tours here, and the only kind that scales with a bad week. If the aurora does not appear you can rejoin, in several cases every night until it does. It turns one disappointing night into as many attempts as your trip has left, which is what makes it worth paying for — but only if you have the nights to spend.

One free re-join on another night — 14 of the tours here, and the most useful kind for most visitors. Most put you on the next evening’s departure if a tour ran and the aurora did not show; a few simply let you re-book another night. One extra attempt, on this trip, at no cost — which is worth far more than it sounds if you have even one night in reserve.

A rebooking voucher — 11 of the tours here, and the one to read carefully. Most run two or three years and one never expires while the tour keeps running, which sounds like the most generous of the three and is the least useful of them. You can only redeem it by coming back to Iceland. Treat it as a discount on a future holiday, not as insurance for this one.

The table below gives each operator’s own wording rather than our paraphrase, because the details differ between them and the details are the entire point.

Eight of these depart the north — a correction

Until we re-checked every operator in September 2026, this page said that all of these depart Reykjavík and that no Akureyri operator published terms we could confirm. That was wrong, and the error was ours rather than a change on their side: Imagine Iceland and The Traveling Viking state their terms plainly on the pages we link to, and we had both recorded as “check operator site”.

The split is now 21 departures from Reykjavík and 8 from Akureyri and the north. If you are building a trip around the north, a free second attempt is no longer a reason to prefer the capital — which is the opposite of what this page told you before.

The northern policies are mostly the next-evening kind, so they need you to still be in the area the following night. The 11 tours that are not on this page

Beyond the 29 listed here, 11 tours have no free retry we could confirm, and they fall into three groups.

Two mention a retry we were unable to pin down — wording along the lines of “free retry if no aurora seen, check operator for validity window”. Four publish nothing about it at all, meaning we looked and found no stated terms. The remaining five say plainly that no retry is offered.

None of that makes them bad tours — it makes them tours to judge on something other than the retry. Every tour page on this site shows its own policy wording, whatever that wording is.

Match the kind to the nights you have left

One night in Iceland? The kind barely matters, because you will not be able to redeem any of them. Judge the tour on group size, on whether the guide chases cloud, and on price, and treat the retry as something you probably will not claim. If two tours are otherwise equal, take the one with a voucher — at least that one survives until your next trip.

Two to four nights? This is where a free re-join earns its keep, and where WHEN you book matters more than which policy you buy. Take the retry-bearing tour on your FIRST night. The same policy is worth one attempt on your final evening and up to three on your first, and that single decision is worth more than the difference between any two policies on this page.

Five nights or more? Now an unlimited retry is genuinely the strongest thing on the page, because it is the only kind you can use repeatedly. A cheap coach tour early in the week followed by a small-group chase later also works well. Whichever you pick, ask how the retry is claimed at booking time — some operators want an email, others want you at the departure point with your original voucher, and in peak season a seat on the night you want is not guaranteed.
