A private tour departs when your guide judges the conditions are best, goes where the sky is actually clearing, and can stay out an extra hour if a substorm is building — or start two hours later than a scheduled tour would.

Because aurora is a timing problem as much as a location problem, that is worth considerably more here than it would be on a daytime sightseeing trip. It is the closest a guided option gets to the freedom of driving yourself, without you having to drive Icelandic winter roads at night.

Who it is genuinely wrong for

Solo travellers and couples, on price alone — you are paying for empty seats, and a small-group minibus will serve you better for less. It is also a poor fit if you actively want the social side of a shared tour; some people book aurora tours partly for the company on the roadside, and a private vehicle removes that.
