Northern Lights Super Jeep Chase

A super-jeep is the most capable aurora vehicle in Iceland and usually the most expensive seat on the mountain. It earns that on some nights and not on others; the difference is worth understanding before you book.

How we make money: some booking links on this page are affiliate links — if you book through them we may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. It never changes the price you pay, and it does not decide which tours we list: every tour here is checked by hand and ranked on group size, retry policy and what is actually included. We do not sell tours or process payments; booking and cancellation are handled by the operator.
A modified 4x4 — lifted suspension, 38-to-44-inch tyres, reinforced drivetrain — capable of routes closed to every other vehicle on this site: unploughed tracks, river crossings, and highland roads that a minibus cannot legally or physically attempt in winter.
Group sizes are correspondingly small, usually four to nine people. That makes the dark-adaptation and re-routing advantages of a small-group minibus stronger again, on top of the terrain access.
The real prize is not the driving; it is that a super-jeep can reach ground where there is nobody else and no road lighting at all. On a busy night at a well-known site near Reykjavík you may be sharing a car park with three coaches and a hundred phone screens. Twenty minutes up a track nobody else can drive, you are not.
It also widens the cloud search. When the whole accessible lowland is socked in, a jeep can gain height or cross into the next valley system. That is the scenario where the premium pays for itself outright.
On a clear, settled night with strong activity, a super-jeep delivers the same aurora as a minibus for substantially more money, plus a rougher ride. If you are booking your only night and the forecast is unambiguous, the extra capability has nothing to do.
Two practical notes. The ride is genuinely bumpy on the tracks that justify the vehicle — worth knowing if anyone in your party is prone to motion sickness. And you will be standing still outside in the cold for long stretches; check whether warm overalls are included, because on these tours they are not a gimmick.
The free Aurora Iceland app scores 100+ viewing spots every 5 minutes and sends an alert when conditions turn good — so you can pick the right night for your tour.
A tour in a heavily modified 4x4 — lifted, running 38-to-44-inch tyres — that can drive unploughed tracks, cross rivers and reach highland areas closed to minibuses and coaches in winter. Groups are small, usually four to nine people.
It is worth it when cloud is widespread or the popular sites are crowded, because the vehicle can reach ground nothing else can. On a clear night with strong activity it shows you the same aurora as a cheaper minibus, so the premium buys you very little.
Usually four to nine, depending on the vehicle. That is smaller than a minibus tour, so you also get the benefits of a very dark group with almost no stray phone light.
