The Honest Answer, Up Front
We build an aurora forecast for a living, so this is a slightly awkward article to write: an aurora forecast is genuinely reliable for about 30 minutes to 3 hours. After that, it degrades fast.
That is not a flaw in any particular app. It is physics. And knowing exactly where the reliable window ends is the difference between a trip planned well and a trip planned around a number that was never meant to carry that weight.
Here are the three horizons, what each one is actually built from, and how much trust each one deserves.
Minutes to Hours: The Only Window That Is Genuinely Reliable
Every real-time aurora forecast on earth traces back to a handful of spacecraft parked at L1, a gravitational balance point about 1.5 million kilometres sunward of Earth. They measure the solar wind — its speed, its density, and critically the Bz component of the embedded magnetic field — as it streams past them.
Then that plasma has to cover the remaining distance to Earth. At typical solar wind speeds of 400 to 800 km/s, that takes roughly 30 to 60 minutes.
That gap is the entire basis of short-term aurora nowcasting. When Bz swings strongly negative at L1, we know with high confidence that the magnetosphere is about to start coupling — and we know it about half an hour before it happens. Models like OVATION turn that measurement into a live probability map within minutes.
This window is the real product. If you want to know whether to put your boots on right now, the data is excellent. If you want to know about Thursday, it has nothing to say.
One to Three Days: The Kp Outlook, and What It Can Honestly Tell You
The next horizon out comes from watching the Sun itself. When a coronal mass ejection launches, forecasters estimate its speed and trajectory and predict when it will arrive. CME transit time from Sun to Earth is typically 1 to 3 days, which is why NOAA publishes a three-day geomagnetic forecast.
This tier is reasonably trustworthy for the shape of the week — it will tell you that Wednesday night looks more disturbed than Tuesday. What it will not do is nail the timing or the strength. Arrival estimates routinely miss by several hours in either direction, and a CME forecast as a direct hit can turn out to be a glancing blow that barely registers.
Treat the 1-3 day forecast as a ranking, not a promise. It is good for deciding which of your remaining nights to keep free. It is not good for deciding whether to see the aurora at all.

Twenty-Seven Days Out: Interesting, But Not Plannable
You will also see 27-day outlooks. These are not predictions in any meaningful sense — they are extrapolations of solar rotation. The Sun turns roughly once every 27 days as seen from Earth, so an active region that produced activity last rotation gets pencilled in to produce it again when it swings back around.
Sometimes it does. Often the region has decayed, reorganised, or fired in a direction that misses us entirely. The 27-day outlook is a useful background signal for whether the Sun is in a busy phase. It is not something to book flights around, and anyone presenting a specific date a month out as a “great aurora night” is overselling a rotation estimate.
The Part Almost Nobody Leads With: Cloud Cover Is the Harder Forecast
Here is the turn that matters if your trip is to Iceland specifically.
The aurora forecast is the easy half. Geomagnetic activity is a planet-scale phenomenon, driven by measurable inputs, and on any given autumn or winter night in Iceland there is usually something happening overhead. The variable that actually decides your night is whether there is a cloud between you and it.
And cloud is a much worse forecasting problem. It is local, it is fast-moving, and in Iceland it is genuinely chaotic — the North Atlantic pushes weather systems across the island on a timescale of hours. A cloud forecast is decent 6 to 12 hours out and increasingly speculative beyond that. It also varies enormously over short distances: the south coast can be socked in while a valley 90 minutes inland sits under clear sky.
That asymmetry is the whole reason we score 100+ individual locations across Iceland rather than publishing one national number. A single country-wide aurora rating cannot answer the only question that matters on the night — where is the sky clear right now? — so we combine forecast cloud data with live ground observations from Icelandic weather stations and score each spot separately. Can I Book My Trip Around the Forecast?
No — and you do not need to.
You cannot plan a specific night months ahead. Nobody can. What you can plan is enough nights, in a place with escape routes to clearer sky, during a season with enough darkness. That converts an unforecastable single event into a very forecastable probability, which is exactly how we recommend thinking about it in how many nights you actually need.
The practical version:
- Booking (months out): pick the season, not the night. September through March. The September equinox period is statistically favourable.
- Three days out: check the Kp outlook and rank your remaining nights.
- Same evening: check cloud cover locally and pick your target spot.
- On the night: stay out past midnight and watch live data. The best hours are usually 22:00 to 01:00, but bursts happen either side.
What a “High Forecast” Does and Does Not Promise
One last honest caveat, because it is the single most common disappointment we hear about. A high Kp number means the auroral oval is energised. It does not mean you will walk outside and see the sky on fire.
Aurora is often a faint grey-green arc to the naked eye even when the numbers are strong, and your camera will show colour your eyes cannot. The forecast is a tool for stacking odds, not a schedule. Used at the right horizon, it works very well.
