How we make money: some booking links on this page are affiliate links — if you book through them we may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. It never changes the price you pay, and it does not decide which tours we list: every tour here is checked by hand and ranked on group size, retry policy and what is actually included. We do not sell tours or process payments; booking and cancellation are handled by the operator.
Grouped by departure point, then by price. The arrangement column is the operator’s own wording as recorded at our last check — read it rather than the phrase “hotel pickup” on a booking listing, because the two are not always the same thing.

This catches out more first-time visitors than anything else on the site. Central Reykjavík restricts large-vehicle access on many streets, so on a coach or a big minibus "hotel pickup" generally means one of the city’s designated pickup points — a numbered stop that may be a five-to-ten-minute walk from your door, found in the dark, in winter, usually before 21:00.
One operator on this page states the constraint outright: pickup is from designated points only, with no pickup from city-centre hotels or private Airbnb addresses due to traffic restrictions. The others are less explicit about it, but the same city rules apply to the same size of vehicle.
The practical move is to find your stop number the moment you book, not on the night. The table below gives each operator’s own wording, because that wording is the only reliable guide to which kind of pickup you are getting.
Pickup typically opens about 30 minutes before the stated departure time and runs until the vehicle is full and moving. Four of the operators here say so explicitly; the rest follow the same pattern.
That window exists because the driver has a circuit of stops to complete before heading out of town, and the tour is timed against darkness rather than against your evening. A vehicle that waits ten minutes at one stop makes everybody late for the part that matters. Be at your point at the start of the window, not the end of it.
If you miss the pickup, you have generally missed the tour, and a no-show is not the same as a weather cancellation — the retry policies covered on our free-retry page apply to the aurora not showing, not to you not showing.
One tour here promises door-to-door pickup from any Reykjavík accommodation, and it is not a coincidence that the operators able to offer it run small vehicles. A super-jeep or a nine-seat minibus can enter streets a 55-seat coach legally cannot.
So if being collected from your actual address matters — you are travelling with small children, someone has limited mobility, or you are staying somewhere awkward to reach on foot at night — the format matters more than the promise. Look at private tours and super-jeep tours first, and read the pickup wording rather than trusting the phrase "hotel pickup" on a listing.
Eight of the 42 tours we track do not offer pickup, and they are not being cheap about it. The pattern is structural: every boat tour and every fixed-location experience on the site is meet-there, because the thing you booked is at a specific address. A cruise leaves from the Old Harbour in Reykjavík. A planetarium show happens at the planetarium.
The remaining two are a bus tour departing central Akureyri and a snowmobile trip that meets at its base camp near Mývatn. In every one of the eight cases the tour page lists the exact meeting address, and the second table below collects them.
None of this makes them worse tours. If you are staying in central Reykjavík, walking ten minutes to the Old Harbour is easier than a coach circuit — the boat tours are arguably the most convenient option in the city for exactly that reason.
Keflavík is about 45 minutes from Reykjavík, and aurora tours are built around a city circuit that does not extend to the airport — one operator here says so in as many words. If you are landing in the evening and hoping to go straight out, plan on reaching your accommodation first.
A layover is a different problem again, and not a hopeless one: we cover what is realistic in seeing the northern lights from a Keflavík layover.
The free Aurora Iceland app scores 100+ viewing spots every 5 minutes and sends an alert when conditions turn good — so you can pick the right night for your tour.
Usually from a designated bus stop near your hotel rather than the entrance, because central Reykjavík restricts large-vehicle access on many streets. Smaller vehicles — private tours and super-jeeps — can more often reach your actual address. Each tour on this page shows the operator’s own wording for its arrangement.
On all 34 tours listed here it is included in the price — not one of them lists pickup as a paid extra, and several state explicitly that it is free. It is still worth confirming the pickup point at booking, because that is the part that varies.
Typically about 30 minutes before the stated departure time, running until the vehicle is full and moving. Be there at the start of that window — the driver has a circuit of stops to finish and generally will not wait.
Eight of the 42 we track, and the pattern is structural rather than arbitrary: every boat tour and every fixed-location experience is meet-there, because a cruise leaves from the Old Harbour and a planetarium show happens at the planetarium. The other two are a bus tour from central Akureyri and a snowmobile trip meeting at its base camp near Mývatn. Every one of them publishes an exact meeting address.
Airport pickup is not offered — Keflavík is around 45 minutes from Reykjavík and the tours run a city circuit. Private Airbnb addresses in the city centre are also excluded by at least one operator because of traffic restrictions, so if you are not in a hotel, check the pickup wording before booking.
